February 18, 2007 Meeting
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Tom Hudson. This was the first meeting that we have held at RFH's Hide-a-way just north of Phoenix.
Some of the members await the start of the meeting. Discussion was held on the Federation's plan to have all 12 positions for the divisional to come from the trail. Our club asked Tom to vote that the Federation keep the standing rules, which are 10 Federation members from the trail and 2 from the CTC. Also the club asked Tom to vote to have the Federation fund these two members from monies received thru the CTC. We will know the results of this vote in April. Tom gave a report on the NYS BASS Federation meeting that was held in January. The report gave the reason for the increase in entry fees for the Federations CTC which will be held at Ticonderoga, NY this year. Tom also reported that the Federation was auctioning off a 19' bass boat at their fund raiser for 2007. It is a $20,000 Skeeter boat with a 115 hp motor, trolling motor, depth finder, and other extras. The Federation will accept any bid over $12,000. If nobody from the Federation bids over that, then they will place the boat on e-Bay. A motion was made & seconded, that "If the 6 man CTC team ends up in the money any year, they will pay back to the GOB CTC fund the entry fee that the fund paid, and that any remaining monies will be split up between the 8 ( 6 regulars and the 2 alternates (if they attended). Discussion was held and a vote was taken. Passed. Election of officers: Because all positions were unopposed, outgoing Secretary, Connell Raate, cast one representative ballot for all nominated officers. The officers for 2007 are: President Tom Hudson Treasurer Chris French Secretary Paul Hudson Tournament Committee Jack Loughery, Ryan Smith, Garret Kinney Webmaster Connell Raate Tom asked for a volunteer from the 6 man team to head up the fund raiser at Bass Pro this year. Dick Hyde reported that we should be able to attend the Bass Pro Classic event on both weekends this year. Dick also said the we have been promised that we can set up our booth next to the fish pond this year. Tom expressed that he was happy being there, because last year we were right next to the NYS BASS Federation Junior's booth. The Juniors were also selling tickets, so us being there was hurting the Juniors and that is not what we like, or want, to do. After discussion, Jack Loughery volunteered to chair the classic committee.
Bill Alexander explains his jigs. Next, we introduced our guest speaker, Bill Alexander. Bill is a 14-time New York State Federation Team Champion who spends much of his free time designing and hand tying his special lures. Bill was asked to attend our club meeting so that he could take us through a “show & tell” session on his complete line of hand-crafted jigs. Bill began by explaining the design of his jig heads along with the hook position, angle and placement and how they would react and track through weeds, rocks and the various bottom structures. He also discussed his selection of deer hair and rubber skirting and how they too would appear in the various water columns. Bill takes great pride in custom “hand tying” each jig to insure its performance and repeatability. He discussed how the deer hairs on his jigs tend to be more subtle than the “puffed” rubber counterparts, thereby giving his jig combination a different look than those presented by manufactured jigs. He stated that his objective was that his lures must imitate freshwater crustaceans such as crabs or crawfish as much as possible, thus giving his angler an edge over manufactured lures for those “uncatchable” bass. We all questioned Bill on his flipping and pitching techniques and he responded by discussing the various weights from 1/8 oz. all the way up to 7/8 oz., and how he presents them. His favorite is his 1/8 oz hair jig, dressed with a trailer and he explained how he skips it under and around docks, retrieving it slowly to attract those difficult bass. Bill also discussed the strength of using his 7/8 oz. jigs for busting through the heavy mat and weed beds to get to the entrenched bass. Bill also explained how and which jigs were more productive in spring, summer and fall climates due to water temperatures. Bill will custom make his jigs in most any color for you, but he strongly believes that the basic dark colors such as natural brown, black, blue, green pumpkin, and black mixed with just a little chartreuse, orange or red will produce the major share of your largemouth and smallmouth bass. Anyone interested in purchasing his M.T.O. (Made To Order) jigs, can do so by calling Bill at (315) 762-5752 or writing him at: M.T.O. Lures, P.O. Box 286, Sylvan Beach, New York 13157. Bill is developing his web page, www.billysmtolures.com (Billy's made to order lures) where you may be able to obtain his custom hair jigs, lures, etc. To obtain ON-LINE selection sheets of his complete product line of jig heads and color charts along with the associated price list, please click below;
